Join us to learn about the work of El Departamento de la Comida (El Depa) in Puerto Rico, their experiences connecting with diverse food projects, facilitating collaboration between people, plants, seeds, and the issues that our human and plant communities face together.
In this workshop, we'll discuss:
food sovereignty in a US colony
experiences and challenges of frontline communities and climate change
the non-profit collective model of El Depa and its iterations
how to adapt to the changing needs of our places and people
This virtual class will feature a live, conversational lecture, and time for questions and answers with the instructor. We will be using Zoom for this class, which you can use on your computer or phone.

About the Instructor: Tara (she / they / ellx), born and raised mostly in the oceans and magic of Puerto Rico. Tara graduated from Pratt Institute School of Architecture, and since then has for the past decade supported the design of El Departamento de la Comida, aka "The Food Department". Organizer, entrepreneur, and living resource within the sustainable + cuir (queer) food and agroecology movements, they have increased access to local food economies, spotlighting the value of farmers within economic transitions from extractive to regenerative practices. Tara lives on a small queer land project, gardening, restoring a 1940's cement house, and learning from her plant and bird neighbors.
