Please join us at our next Third Saturday Work Party on Saturday, February 19th and RSVP to the email listed below the group you are interested in:

Food Bank Plot Soil Building: Composting
When: 10am - 12pm
Who: 4-6 volunteers needed, Leads: Alex, Sheep, Filip
Task: Digging into earth, hauling by wheelbarrows and mixing compost deeper into soil as part of winter soil building of food bank plots
Where: We will meet at the ADA Shed. Come find me on site or email if you are late or don't see us.

Winter Planting & Transplanting
When: 10am - 1pm (or later)
Who: 10 volunteers needed. Leads: Will & Renee
Task: We will be planting new fruit trees, shrubs, and perennials throughout the food forest. We will also have the opportunity to divide and relocate existing plants. Come give these plants a new home!

Continued Caring for North Apple Guilds & Area West of it to Helix
When: 12pm to 2:30pm
Who: 5 volunteers needed. Lead: Kimberly
Task: Weeding, sheet mulching, and mulching in areas that still need it, especially high traffic path areas go North Apple Guilds and west of them.. Mulching in this area is a good work out since the wood chip pile is a good 50’ away from where we’ll be working. Weeding will be less strenuous and plenty of that to do. Maybe a few dead Blueberries to remove.

Sheet Mulching Future BIPOC Community Garden
When: 12pm to 2pm
Who: 8-10 volunteers needed. Lead: Cherry
Task: We will be using cardboard and woodchips to cover grass area and create a clean edge in the Phase 2 area and sheet mulch for a future BIPOC Community Garden

Pollinator education area ADA path development
When: 11am - 2pm
Who: 10 volunteers needed, Leads: Jessica & Maddie
Task: Scraping wood chips out of the way, doing the first layer of gravel, moving large blocks to start retaining walls, and some nearby path maintenance weeding.
Where: We will meet at the education plaza (large gravel landing) passed the lower shed, below the bike path. Please stop by the Gathering area closest to the parking lot on your way to sign in.

Compost
When: 11am-2pm
Who: 6 Volunteers, 3 for Ph. 1 and 3 for Ph. 2. Lead: Joe
Task: We will be building a hot compost pile by chopping up plant material using machetes and hand clippers. There may also be opportunities for turning piles using pitchforks and for sifting finished compost.

Where: All groups will meet their lead at the Gathering Plaza at the top of the Beacon Food Forest at the given time. Please sign in on the clipboard at the Outreach Table first. After collecting tools, you'll head to the work area.

What to bring:

  • Water, personal snacks

  • Gardening gloves—We have clean gloves available, if needed.

  • Mask or cloth face covering

  • Weather-appropriate layers

Safety:

  • If you have known exposure to COVID-19, feel sick, or exhibit symptoms, please stay home.

  • We keep these work parties small in order to allow everyone to spread out and work individually. Volunteers should plan to keep 6 feet of distance from others while working.

  • We will have a handwashing station with soap and running water at the worksite.

  • Alcohol or bleach solution is available to disinfect tools.

  • We have a first aid kit available.

Accessibility:

  • The Gathering Plaza, toolshed, bike path, and Education Plaza are wheelchair-accessible.

  • The nearest restroom is about a 5-minute walk away, up a flight of steps. There is also a longer, wheelchair-accessible route. The restrooms are wheelchair-accessible and gender-segregated.
