This is a beginner class on growing edible, tasty oyster mushroom indoors, with simple equipment, in just a few weeks.
This course will provide an introduction to fungi and mushrooms at a basic level
Detailed specific step by step instructions will be provided and you will leave with an Oyster Mushroom kit that you started in class.
Each participant will then make a mushroom kit from basic materials to take home to observe how they grow and produce mushrooms. The kits are easy to assemble, and reliably produce a crop of mushrooms within 3-4 weeks. A question and answer session will round out the afternoon. Handouts of the lecture and reference sheets will be provided.
About the Instructor:
Milton Tam lives in Seattle and has worked, lived, and played in the Pacific Northwest for more than 40 years. His working career was in basic and applied scientific research. He graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in microbiology and immunology, worked at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, rode the biotech revolution, and was a program manager at PATH, a nonprofit organization, where he developed and introduced simple diagnostic tests for use in developing countries. After retirement he wanted to learn more about mushrooms and mycology. Along the way he developed and adapted simple mushroom cultivation methods for use as educational tools and to demonstrate the fungal life cycle. His other interests include fishing, winemaking, gardening, and golfing. He is a member and former Vice President of the Puget Sound Mycological Society, and co-teaches courses in mushroom cultivation for PSMS and Seattle Tilth. He has gardened at the Picardo P-Patch for nearly 20 years
A handout with a summary of key concepts and lists of reference materials will be provided.
